Installing Your Network Router
If you did not purchase a router from Granbury, work with your network support engineer to configure your router.
Step 1 - Equipment Checklist:
To get started; you will first need to make sure you have all the appropriate items. You will need the following.- Modem: This should already be installed by your ISP (internet service provider).
- A battery backup: It is recommended that it have both battery surge and noise protected outlets.
- Router: This should be included in the equipment shipment you received from Granbury.
Step 2 - Battery Backup & Modem:
Locate where your internet modem is placed in your store. Once you have located the modem, you will want to plug in the battery backup into the wall where the modem is. Once the backup is plugged in, press and hold the button until it beeps and the green light turns on. Plug the modem into the Battery Surge and Noise Protected side of the battery backup.
Tip: Best practices is to plug your router, modem, and the switch into the side that says "Battery Surge and Noise Protected Outlets". The difference between that side and the other side is that if the power goes out, the items plugged into the Battery side will not lose power and will run off the battery backup, where as the other side will lose power but be protected from power surges.
Step 3 - Powering Up The Router:
Locate your router in the shipment sent from Granbury. Remove all the contents from the box and set aside the documentation and disk in a safe place just in case you need them in the future.Screw the antennas on the top of the router. These antennas will help boost the signal to wireless devices you may be using in your store.
Take the adapter and plug it into the back of the router and then plug the router into the Battery Surge and Noise Protected side of the battery backup.
The router should be powered and ready to go.
Step 4 - Connect The Router To The Modem:
Your modem needs to communicate with the router so take the black cat5 cable that came with the router and plug it into the back of the router in the WAN adapter port (Wide Area Network)
Run that same cable from the back of the router to the modem. Locate the WAN port on the modem and plug it in.
This establishes a WAN connection, which covers a wider geographical area. You are now ready to move on to the second segment of a hardware install which would be to setup your Switch.
